Natural Occurrence
Zinc is the 24th most abundant element in the Earth’s crust and has been present ever since the planet formed its surface. All life on earth has developed in the presence of zinc.
The concentration of zinc in nature without the additional influence of human activities (anthropogenic emissions) is called “natural background.” The natural background levels in surface water, soil and rock vary over a wide range of concentrations. Background levels of zinc in soil and rock typically range between 10 and 300 milligrams per kilogram, and zinc in rivers varies from less than 10 micrograms per liter to over 200 micrograms.

Zinc is an essential mineral perceived by the public today as being of "exceptional biologic and public health importance", especially regarding prenatal and postnatal development. Zinc deficiency affects about two billion people in the developing world and is associated with many diseases. In children, deficiency causes growth retardation, delayed sexual maturation, infection susceptibility, and diarrhea. Enzymes with a zinc atom in the reactive center are widespread in biochemistry, such as alcohol dehydrogenase in humans. Consumption of excess zinc can cause ataxia, lethargy and copper deficiency.
